Nearly 2,000 teachers in King County received classroom tools and resources they needed thanks to a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Funding is projected to fund 158 classrooms in the Auburn School District, benefitting 20,878 students.

Through $10 gift cards distributed at Starbucks stores throughout the county this past fall, community members and the Gates Foundation funded 2,670 classroom projects— ranging from basic materials such as books to scientific models for classroom interaction and hands – on learning. Teachers say that more than 278,000 of their students will benefit from these new calculators, books, and other classroom resources and tools.

In addition to this partnership, more than 31,000 people in King County also took a small, but powerful action to improve their local public schools. Many donors gave their own money to projects, which amplified the impact of the program. As a result, 1,933 public school teachers received important classroom resources such as books, microscopes, field trips, and musical instruments. Teachers shared the needs of their individual classrooms with the community, and because of that forged ongoing personal connections with people in King County.
