BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Auburn Mountainview tightens hold on SPSL 3A lead, Auburn Riverside beats Kent-Meridian 14-4 and Auburn falls to Kentlake 12-5

Auburn Mountainview clobbers Clover Park 12-0

Pitchers Brandon Williams and Steven Johnson combined for a one-hit shutout on Wednesday against the Clover Park Cardinals at Clover Park.

Williams got the start and the win with three innings of work, with Johnson picking up two innings in relief.

The Lions jumped out to a 6-1lead in the second inning and added four runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Auburn Mountainview capitalized on Clover Park’s five errors, scoring 12 runs with just six hits.

Nathan Hostetter had three RBIs and a double to go with his 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Michael Winters had three RBIs and a double, and Williams chipped in with two RBIs.

Auburn Mountainview is currently in first place in the South Puget Sound League 3A Division with a 6-1 league record, 8-1 overall.

The Lions will play a non-league game against Auburn at 4 p.m. Friday. The team will play Mount Si at 2 p.m. Friday at Safeco Field and will resume league play with a 4 p.m. contest this Tuesday at Lakes.

Auburn falls to Kentridge 12-5

The Auburn Trojans fell to 2-5 in the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division with a 12-5 loss to Kentridge on Wednesday.

Despite drawing first blood – with one run in the first inning – the eighth-place Trojans (2-5 league, 2-8 overall) committed six errors in the field and were unable to slow down the offensive onslaught of Kentridge (4-1, 4-3).

The Chargers put up five runs in the second inning to go up 5-1 and added to their lead with one run in the third, four in the sixth and two in the seventh inning.

The Trojans added two runs in the third inning and two in the sixth.

Kentridge starter Shayne Matthews pitched six innings, giving up five earned runs and nine hits. Matthews also had four strikeouts.

For Auburn, Zac Tate got the start and the loss, lasting four innings and giving up four earned runs.

Greg Hartke led the Trojans offensively with 3-of-4 hitting with two RBIs and a home run. Brandon Christianson was also 3-of-4 from the plate. As a team the Trojans had nine hits.

Auburn will host Auburn Mountainview at 4 p.m. this Friday for a non-league game and will resume their league schedule with a home game against first-place Kentwood (5-1, 6-1) at 4 p.m. this Tuesday, April 14.

Auburn Riverside beats Kent-Meridian 14-4

Auburn Riverside’s Sam Melick improved to 1-2 with his first victory on the mound, a 14-4 win against the Kent-Meridian Royals this past Tuesday.

Melick threw four innings of no-hit ball and notched five strikeouts and three walks. The win improves the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division sixth-place Ravens to 2-4 league, 3-6 overall. Kent Meridian falls to 0-6 league, 0-7 overall.

Auburn Riverside was led offensively by catcher Joe Briggs who hit his second home run of the season. Briggs finished the game with 2-of-4 hitting and four RBIs.

Shortstop Casey Allen also left the yard, with a solo tater in the fourth inning. Allen finished with three RBIs.

Cameron Grad added two RBIs.

On the basepaths Raven runners wreaked havoc swiping six bases.

Auburn Riverside will resume league play with a 4 p.m. home game on Tuesday against Kentlake.
