Auburn property owners that could be affected by flooding of the White or Green rivers can provide comments and suggestions to King County to help update the County’s Flood Hazard Management Plan.

The plan, which was first adopted in 2007, addresses flood risks to people and property throughout King County.

To help prepare the draft update, the county hosts a public meeting is 6-8:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the William C. Warren Building, 405 E St. NE, Auburn. Officials will discuss the flood risk reduction strategies and includes an overview of the plan, a schedule and a basin-specific presentation for the two rivers.

The update will establish goals, objectives and guiding principles; provide an overview of historic flood and channel migration conditions; identify the accomplishments since the Plan was first adopted; recommend flood risk reduction strategies for the major rivers and tributaries; identify flood hazard management programs; and recommend site-specific projects to further reduce the risk of flooding and channel migration to property owners and residents.

The plan also will describe existing and potential future funding mechanisms to implement the projects and programs in the plan.

The draft update to plan is expected to be released to the public in January for public comment and review and expected to be transmitted to the King County Council and the King County Flood Control District Board of Supervisors in April for review. The plan update also must receive approval from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
