King County is down to two possible sites for South King County’s future waste transfer station — the first on West Valley Highway in Algona, the second on C Street Southwest east of The Outlet Collection Mall in Auburn.

Or, the county could do nothing and leave the station where it has been for 50 years, at 35315 West Valley Highway S.

So says the project’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), which on Thursday the county made available to all.

County officials have been saying for years that the 1960s-era transfer station should be replaced because, among its other age-related shortcomings, it is overburdened and lacks room for recycling services.

Auburn officials said they are not concerned that the county will actually choose the C Street Southwest property as its preferred alternative is the parcel at 35101 West Valley Highway South in Algona.

“I don’t want to say officially that it’s just a formality — officially, the property is still on the list — but we are pretty confident that they are going to reach an agreement with Algona,” said Dana Hinman, director of administration for the City of Auburn,
