Empower Philippines, an Auburn-based nonprofit charity organization that aims to improve the lives of the super typhoon survivors, and children victimized by the natural disaster have the 12th Man spirit.
Auburn’s Therese Zapanta-Verzosa took a photo of the Filipino children this week in Tacloban, one of the worst-hit cities destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan, the most devastating typhoon in recorded history.
The photo shows the survivors’ response to the Seahawks’ show of solidarity when they carried the Philippine flag pre-game right after the typhoon destroyed the city.
With an improvised 12th banner made from a simple bath towel and cut-out numbers, the children who survived the typhoon, most of them orphans now, are praying for their team to win and praying that they are kept in the players’ hearts and minds during the Super Bowl.
Typhoon Haiyan had winds up to 147 mph when it struck the Philippines late last year.
More than 6,000 people died, and nearly 2,000 more are still missing. Millions were displaced when their homes were destroyed or washed away. And authorities are still struggling with the simplest tasks, such as clearing away debris, rebuilding houses and counting the dead.
