Firefighters from the Valley Regional Fire Authority and assisting units responded and contained a fire that extensively damaged a Lakeland Hills home Wednesday morning.

At 10:18 a.m. a neighbor called to report flames coming from a home in the 5000 block of Elliott Court Southeast in the Lakeland Hills area of Auburn. When firefighters from the Valley Regional Fire Authority arrived, they viewed flames coming from windows on the first and second floor, on two sides of the 2,200-square-foot home.

A second alarm was called, with East Pierce Fire & Rescue, South King Fire & Rescue, Kent Regional Fire Authority and the King County Medics arriving to assist the VRFA.

Firefighters worked quickly to knock the fire down, preventing it from spreading to a nearby residence.

The homeowners, a family of four with young children, were not home at the time of the fire. They will be assisted by the Red Cross.

The most probable cause of the fire was the failure of a portable electrical appliance. Damage is estimated at $200,000 for the structure. The amount of damage to contents is undetermined at this time.
