SEPT. 8

River rescue: 4 p.m., (East King County). VRFA Water Rescue technicians, along with rescue units from five jurisdictions and King County, responded to Kanaskat State Park for a possible drowning. The location and terrain were remote, presenting logistical challenges for everybody. They recovered the victim from the river about two hours after he had gone under water.

SEPT. 9

Aid call: 7:44 p.m., (Auburn). VRFA Units & Medic 6 responded to a reported leg fracture and found a young man who had been training with a backpack and fallen, breaking his leg above the knee. Quickly realizing the seriousness of the injury, VRFA personnel stabilized and splinted it. Medic-6 personnel started an IV and administered pain medications. Airlift Northwest transported the young man to Harborview Medical Center

SEPT. 10

Aid call: 5:22 p.m., (Pacific). Engine 38 responded to the King Oscar Motel to help an elderly man who was short of breath. Engine 38 personnel examined the man and Tri-Med ambulance transported him to Auburn Regional Medical Center (ARMC) for further treatment.

SEPT. 11

Aid call: (Auburn). Engine 38 responded to a man who had suffered a cut to the top of his head. Personnel found the man sitting on a curb, holding napkins to his head wound, so they bandaged and stabilized him and an ambulance transported him to ARMC for further care and evaluation.

SEPT. 12

House fire: 4:24 a.m., (Auburn). VRFA Units, along with South King Fire & Rescue units, responded to the 200 block of Hi Crest Drive and a burning house. Arriving units found fire extending to both the kitchen and rear deck area of the single-family residence. The fifth-grade daughter of the family in the home awoke to a crackling sound and a smoky smell. She immediately alerted her parents, and all family members safely evacuated the home. Firefighters soon controlled the fire, containing it to the kitchen area and thus preserving the majority of the home and personal items. The South King Fire Investigation Task Force is investigating the fire.

SEPT. 13

Combative diabetic: 1:44 p.m., (Pacific): Engine 38 and Pacific Police responded to a report of an ill and combative diabetic. The man continued to be combative and had to be restrained to keep him from harming himself. VRFA personnel treated the man with some orange juice, his blood sugar levels increased and his behavior returned to normal. The patient was able to eat a sandwich without assistance and VRFA personnel left him at home with instructions to follow up the incident with his personal physician.
