Fire & rescue blotter | Feb. 13

The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 156 calls for service between Feb. 2 and Feb. 8, among them the following:

Feb. 2

Helping out: 2:20 p.m., (Lea Hill). Engine 34 was returning to the station when a passing driver flagged it down. The concerned driver pointed to a woman he had seen falling off a sidewalk several times while walking and did not wish to see struck by a car. Firefighters contacted the woman who was clearly blitzed but still trying to walk to Kent. After confirming that the woman didn’t need any medical help, firefighters contacted a friend of hers and arranged for a ride to Kent.

Injured male: (Auburn). Engine 32 and Aid 32 responded to a medical incident on the Burlington Northern–Santa Fe railroad tracks adjacent to 2900 A Street Southeast and found a disoriented man lying on a set of siding tracks. BNSF crews had discovered him after slow-moving train cars crushed his toes. Firefighters cared for the man’s injuries and sent him to the hospital by private ambulance. Auburn Police are investigating the incident.

Feb. 3

Medical aid call: 2:23 p.m., (Lea Hill). After the VRFA received a report of a fallen person in the 30800 block of 124th Avenue Southeast, it dispatched Engine 34 to a 23-year-old woman who had tripped and fallen from a standing position while walking. The young woman was 2 ½ months pregnant. Although she sustained only minor injuries, she was transported to ARMC for further medical observation owing to her delicate condition.

Feb. 6

Aid call: 3:58 a.m., (Pacific). VRFA personnel and King County Medic 6 helped a 71-year-old man who had fallen 10 feet from a shop loft onto a concrete floor. Although the man never lost consciousness, he lay alone on the floor for two hours calling for help before his family heard him. The man sustained injuries to his head, chest, right arm, and right shoulder and was transported in stable condition to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Fire Alarm: 4:16 p.m., (Auburn). Engine 38 firefighters responding to a report of an audible smoke detector in a home came upon a homeowner who had been preparing dinner when a pot of buttered potatoes boiled over. The butter burst into flame and the smoke detector went off. The woman threw baking soda onto the fire and reset her fire alarm system. There was only light smoke in the home.

Feb. 7

Vehicle Fire: 8:30 p.m., (Auburn). Several Auburn residents reported a fully-involved car fire with explosions in a vacant field just north of the Auburn Golf Course. VRFA Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire despite stubborn resistance from magnesium materials in the car. Firefighters traced the explosions to several vehicle parts that had fallen into the fire. Firefighters consider the fire suspicious and the South King Fire Investigation Task Force is investigating.

Feb. 8

Aid call: 3:30 p.m., (Lea Hill). Engine 34 Firefighters responding to a dog bite in the 32200 block of 104 Place Southeast treated a 58- year-old woman allegedly bitten by the neighbor’s Great Dane.
