Five Auburn schools earn state top honors

Five Auburn schools have been selected to receive a 2012 Washington Achievement Award sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education:

Five Auburn schools have been selected to receive a 2012 Washington Achievement Award sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education:

• Alpac Elementary School for overall excellence

• Gildo Rey Elementary School for math

• Hazelwood Elementary School for closing achievement gaps

• Lakeland Hills Elementary School for overall excellence and math

• Pioneer Elementary School for math and high progress

The annual award celebrates top-performing elementary, middle, high and comprehensive schools for overall excellence and special recognition in: language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate, closing achievement gaps, and high progress.

The Washington Achievement Award is a highly selective award based on schools’ performance for the three previous years according to the Washington Achievement Index and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver.

Schools will be honored at an awards ceremony on April 30 at Kentwood High School in Covington.
