The Green River continues to run high in the aftermath of heavy rain.

River flows at the Auburn gage were 9,700 cubic feet per second (cfs) as of 1:15 p.m. today.

A Phase 3 minor flooding alert remains in effect. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Green River near Auburn through Saturday evening.

Planned water releases from a flood-control dam in the upper Green River watershed at midweek brought the river up to a Phase 3 flood alert level, according to the King County Flood Warning Center, which has been monitoring flood conditions since midday Tuesday.

At Phase 3, flooding of varied depths can occur in the Green River Valley upstream of Auburn, and in the lower Mill Creek Basin. Southeast Green Valley Road and the West Valley Road could overtop with floodwaters.

Flood flow is considered at 9,000 cfs.

“A flood in the city of Auburn takes place as we go over 12,000 cfs,” said Mayor Pete Lewis. “So we are well below that stage.”Minor flooding is forecast.

The Green River rose above flood flow around 3 p.m. Wednesday and is expected to crest near 10,764 cfs around 4 a.m. Thursday. The river is expected to fall below flood flow Saturday morning, according to the King County Flood Warning Center.

Center staff have been working around the clock since 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to monitor the flood event, which is the result of extensive rainfall in the Cascade Range and foothills.

Flood Warning Center staff will remain on duty throughout the duration of this flood event.Updated information on flooding will also be posted on the King County website at www.kingcounty.gov, or via RPIN, the area’s regional website at www.rpin.org.

An automated flood alert system is now available and provides real-time warning of potential high water on more than a half-dozen rivers. King County residents and business owners can sign up to receive King County Flood Alerts by visiting www.kingcounty.gov/flood, or by calling 206-263-3400 during regular business hours to register by phone. Messages of potential high flows on any of King County’s major river systems can be sent by phone, text or email.

After receiving an automated call from the City of Auburn informing them of the Stage 3 flood alert issued for the Green River, Billy and Vicky Crocker grabbed their dog, Sadie, and went for a walk at Isaac Evans Park to survey the river on Wednesday.

“We got the call and had to come down and see it,” Vicky Crocker said. “We walk down her all the time,”

Billy said. “When we don’t walk on this side, we walk on the other side. Sadie is looking for the beach, she can’t figure out where it went.”
