The race for Pacific City Council Position No. 2 tightened as of Tuesday, with incumbent Councilmember John Jones maintaining a slim 28-vote lead with 459 votes (51.57 percent) to challenger Brice Erickson’s 431 (48.43 percent).

In the Council Position No. 4 contest, Vic Kave leads Leanne Guier by 57 votes, with 476 (53.18 percent) to 419 votes (46.82).

Guier, who was unable to pull out of the race after being appointed mayor, has said that if she were to win the election, she wouldn’t take the position but would instead defer to the City Council to appoint a councilmember for Position No. 4. Appointed Councilmember Katie Garberding holds that seat.

The No. 2 and No. 4 races could be subject to mandatory recounts if they remain close.

Washington State law mandates a hand recount when final results – which will be certified on Nov. 26 – are less than 150 votes and also less than one-quarter of 1 percent apart.

In Pacific’s two other council races, Council President Tren Walker will retain his Position No. 7 seat with 572 votes (67.93 percent) to Ronnie M. Harris’ 270 votes (32.07).

In the Position No 5 race first-time candidate Stacy May Knudtson is beating her opponent Gary Nitschke 571 votes (61.05 percent) to 349 votes (38.95 percent).
