Early results for Auburn mayor and city council elections on Nov. 4 show all incumbents, a recent appointee, and a political newcomer ending the evening with strong leads.
Mayor Nancy Backus was cruising to victory in her bid to be re-elected to her fourth term as Auburn’s mayor, picking up 4,161 votes (57.1%) over Councilmember Yolanda Trout’s 3,058 votes (41.98%).
Backus has been Auburn’s mayor since 2014. Prior to that, she was a member of the city council. Before entering politics, Backus worked in financial leadership at Boeing.
Auburn City Council
• Position 2: Early results for the Auburn City Council Position 2 race show incumbent Kate Baldwin leading challenger Adib Altallal in her quest for a second term, picking up 4,820 votes (69.63%) of the total 6,922 votes cast to Altallal’s 2,819 votes (29.17%).
• Position 4: In the race for Position 4, the lone open seat on the city council, Brian Lott leads Erica Tomas by a healthy margin with 3,894 votes (55.57%) to Tomas’ 3,072 votes (43.84%).
• Position 6: Lisa Stirgus ended the night with what appears to be an lead over former developer Cobi Clark in her bid to win her first full term on the Auburn City Council, garnering 4,064 votes (58.09%) to Clark’s 2,873 votes (41.07%.). Stirgus was appointed to the seat this past April to fill out the remainder of former Councilmember Larry Brown’s term.
The tallies reported above combine the total votes cast in King and Pierce counties, as of 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. The final results and certification for the general election will be Nov. 25.
Auburn School Board
For Auburn School Board Director District No. 3: Valerie Gonzales is leading with 5,450 votes (70.83%) over Dirk A. Dearinger’s 2,130 votes (27.73%).
For Director District No. 5, Shelly Combs ran unopposed.
These combined results include both King and Pierce counties.
Other results
• King County Executive: The race is tight as Girmay Zahilay leads with 50.07% of the vote vs. Claudia Balducci, who has 48.44%.
• King County Council: In the King County Council District No. 7 race to represent Federal Way and Auburn, longtime incumbent Pete von Reichbauer has received 64.59% of the vote in his race against challenger Maya Vengadasalam, who has received 34.79%. Pete von Reichbauer has held the seat for 31 years. In the King County Council District No. 9 race, incumbent Reagan Dunn is leading with 72.51% of the vote (23,319 votes) over challenger Jude Anthony at 27.04% (8.697 votes).
• Senate Joint Resolution No. 8201: This statewide measure is passing with 70% of the vote in King County and 56.78% statewide. With this measure, the Legislature has proposed a constitutional amendment on allowing money in Washington’s long-term care fund to be invested. This amendment would allow the state fund dedicated to providing long-term care benefits for eligible seniors and people with disabilities to be invested as authorized by law.
• King County Prop. 1: Proposition No. 1, Medic One – Emergency Medical Services Replacement of Existing Levy is passing with 79.39% of the vote. For the county-wide Medic One emergency medical services system, the county seeks to replace an expiring levy by imposing regular property taxes of $0.25 or less per thousand dollars of assessed valuation for each of six consecutive years, with collection beginning in 2026, as provided in King County Ordinance No. 19950, to continue paying for Medic One emergency medical services. For a property with an assessed valuation of $844,000, the maximum rate would be approximately $211 in the first year. Qualifying seniors, veterans, and disabled persons would be eligible for exemption from the levy.
