MAYORAL RACE CLOSE-UP: Virginia Haugen

Virginia Haugen

• Age: 66.

• Born: San Diego, Calif.

• Occupation: Retired from Boeing; current member of Auburn City Council

• Family: Single, three daughters, two grandchildren.

• Educational background: Elsinore Union High School in Southern California.

• Name at least three things you would like to accomplish as mayor:

1. Work with the City Council to take control of spending, including travel expenses, dues and membership fees, conferences and seminars.

2. Hire a city administrator, in addition to the mayor.

3. Restrict water usage

• On balancing the budget: “We’re in serious trouble. We have a lot of people going to meetings that I feel are unnecessary. Every little bit we cut helps. We’re looking at expanding parking in the lot across from the police station, and we can’t afford it.”

• Downtown redevelopment: “There is not going to be any more building. We’re in a lease for three years on that annex building (Auburn Professional Plaza next to City Hall) and I don’t know if we can afford the lease, but I believe absolutely we cannot. The lease agreement will have to be renegotiated. That may cause a lawsuit down the road, but it will have to be done.”
