Outstanding eighth-grade music students from across Washington, including six from Mt. Baker Middle School, received top honors by being selected to participate in the fourth annual WMEA Junior All-State West Band, Choir and Orchestra.
Lizzy Lee (violin, orchestra); Gia Hy Tu (violin, orchestra); Connor Heilborn (cello, orchestra); Jessica Fletcher (flute, band); Jocelyn Mitchell (trumpet, band); Adam Benabid (trombone, band) will join more than 200 young performers in the March 14 event.
The All-State groups will rehearse and present a final concert in Burien’s Highline Performing Arts Center. The musicians were selected through auditions to participate in the event, which is sponsored by the Washington Music Educators Association.

Golan, a senior, and Julie Chang, a sophomore, were chosen to participate in the 41st biennial MENC All-Northwest Band, Orchestra and Treble Choir, Mixed Choir, Jazz Band and/or Jazz Choir. The groups will convene in Spokane on Feb. 12-15. They will rehearse under the direction of world-renowned conductors and present their final concerts in Spokane’s INB Performing Arts Center.
