Women in Auburn and the surrounding communities who need a mammogram will be able to experience the latest in state-of-the-art 3D technology at the Franciscan Medical Pavilion – Auburn.

The imaging services include 3D screening mammography also known as digital breast tomosynthesis (or tomo), and bone densitometry (DEXA) scans.

“This advanced 3D technology enables us to make a diagnosis earlier,” said Jeana Oh, MD, board certified radiologist with TRA Medical Imaging (TRA) and lead radiologist of Franciscan Breast Center at St. Francis Hospital. “The earlier a cancer diagnosis is made, the sooner a patient can begin a multi-disciplinary, targeted treatment plan, which can lead to better outcomes.”

Studies have shown that 3D mammography improves the early detection of breast cancer by 30 percent and reduces the need for additional breast imaging. Traditional digital mammography continues to be the standard of care for breast screenings. Bone densitometry is a noninvasive scan that screens the spine and hip for osteoporosis.

The screening experience for women using 3D mammography is similar to what they have experienced in the past. During the 3D part of the exam, an x-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in seconds. There’s no additional compression, and the extra imaging only takes a few more seconds.

All of the screening mammograms in Auburn are interpreted by TRA’s breast imaging specialists, and anyone needing further diagnostic care will be referred to the Franciscan Breast Center at St. Francis. Women do not need a referral for their screening mammogram, but they do need to have a provider who can receive their results. A referral from a health care provider is required for a DEXA scan.

Appointments are available Monday through Friday in Auburn. To schedule a screening mammogram or a DEXA at the Franciscan Medical Pavilion – Auburn, please call 253-944-4025.
