The Pacific City Council on Thursday selected Council President Leanne Guier as the city’s new mayor.
After a brief executive session to discuss the merits of Guier and her opponent Councilmember John Jones, the council voted 5-0 in favor of Guier.
“I think either of our members who were up would have made an exceptionally good mayor for Pacific in today’s environment,” Councilmember Joshua Putnam said. “They both managed to hold things together throughout the last 18 months, which is a testament to endurance, if nothing else. I believe Leanne’s conciliatory approach will help rebuilding city hall.”
“I think in the current sensitive situation with employees, I lean towards Leanne’s management style,” Putnam added. “Which has nothing to do with competence on either side, it’s just a question of style at this time.”
Neither Guier nor Jones participated in the executive session or the vote.
Guier was sworn in immediately and will serve the remainder of Cy Sun’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2015.
Guier, 52, has been a Pacific resident for 17 years and active in community organizations for the past 10 years.
She was appointed to the City Council in 2009.
Sun’s recall as the town’s mayor became official on Tuesday. The final tally of the vote was 949 (65.4 percent) votes in favor of recalling him, with 502 (34.6 percent) in favor of retaining the former mayor.
