School bus hits, injures pedestrian

School bus pedestrian collision

A young man sustained serious head and leg injuries after an Auburn School District bus struck him at the intersection of 22nd and I Street Northeast Thursday morning.

Medics transported the unidentified 20-something man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was listed in serious condition.

According to Auburn police, the bus was  turning left onto ‘I’ Street shortly before 8 a.m. when it hit the man, about midway through the crosswalk and dragged him about 30 feet.

Because there was no clear negligence, such as talking on the phone or texting, police cited the driver for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, a traffic violation.

Investigators are trying to determine why the bus driver didn’t see the man. There was some light fog in the area, but it remains unclear what if any role it played.

Besides the driver, the school bus was empty. No one else was hurt.
