‘Smiles at Christmas’

Auburn church gives away toys to families in need

Auburn’s Overcomer Covenant Church offered “Smiles at Christmas,” a free holiday toy giveaway for nearly 300 families in need or on the verge of homelessness last Saturday.

Approximately 2,000 toys were distributed to nearly 1,000 children over the course of the day at the West Hill church, at 33415 Military Road S., according to event organizers.

Mayor Nancy Backus was among the special guests.

Toys were purchased by Overcomer Covenant Church, partner organization Mission Africa, along with donations from World Vision and discounts from Walmart and Disney.

Parents had the opportunity to pick out a toy for their children discreetly while they participated in fun activities. There were bouncy houses, movies on a big screen, various games, photos with Santa and snacks.

In addition, the church gave away a limited number of winter coats and hosted a hot holiday meal for all participants.
