A woman in her 20s evacuated her burning mobile home safely Thursday morning, thanks to her smoke alarm.
The fire occurred at 5 a.m. at 4040 Auburn Way S., at Wildwood Estates, the Valley Regional Fire Authority reported.
The woman woke to the alarm sounding, saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home and evacuated quickly. She called 911, and the first VRFA fire crews arrived within two minutes, ultimately knocking down the fire in 14 minutes.
VRFA investigators have determined the cause to be electrical in nature. Damage to the approximately 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom home is estimated at $15,000.
The resident will be staying with relatives temporarily. No one was injured.
Working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms likely saved the woman’s life, fire official said. The VRFA reminds everyone to test their smoke and CO alarms and replace any units over 10 years old. CO alarms often have a shorter life span and need replaced after seven years. With possible power outages from incoming storms, be sure you also have alarms with a battery backup.
