Two working smoke alarms alerted a man and a woman to a fire in their duplex, located in the 1700 block of C Place Southeast in Auburn on Friday morning.

The two residents, along with their two dogs, evacuated safely and alerted the two adult females and infant living in the other side of the two-story duplex to the fire around 8 a.m. Once outside, the residents called 911.

Valley Regional Fire Authority was on the scene of the fire within four minutes, spotting flames and smoke from a second floor window. Thirteen personnel from three engines, a ladder truck and a medical aid unit quickly extinguished the fire and kept it confined to one room of the duplex unit.

The fire completely destroyed one room of the unit and caused heavy smoke damage throughout one side of the approximately 2,500-square-foot duplex.

The couple and two dogs living in the unit will be staying with friends until the damage can be repaired. Fortunately, the second duplex unit was not damaged and the three residents will be able to return home.

The fire is under investigation.

The VRFA reminds everyone to install both photoelectric and ionization sensor alarms in their home and to test them frequently.
