For the Reporter
The City of Auburn and Auburn Downtown Association present the newest Streetscape at One East Main Street, featuring the artwork of Sarah Lovett through June.
The artist, who is known for her performances of large-scale puppets at festivals throughout the region, is allowing her butterfly to be on display in downtown Auburn as part of Streetscapes Auburn for the next several months.
Filling up the vacant windows at One Main, the butterfly puppet is suspended by a web of bright yellow and illuminated throughout the day for downtown visitors to enjoy. Adjacent to the butterfly, large white translucent balloons are suspended and inflate and deflate in a slow rhythmic sequence.
In addition to being a graphic and paper artist, Lovett creates gigantic puppets that have articulated pieces and are beautifully crafted using a deep knowledge of materials and construction techniques. Her work often incorporates post-consumer materials, fabric, paper, plastic, wire and glue. The artwork when worn requires teamwork with all the participants moving together as in an organism. The performance of the artwork coming to life can be described as a dance, ritual, process, or story.
Streetscapes Auburn is a City program in collaboration with the ADA.
