An Auburn man was injured when a train collided with his semi-truck as he crossed the tracks in Kentucky last Friday.

Viktor Kalchenia, 27, was treated for burns at the scene by the medics and later flown to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, where he is listed in stable condition.

The Pulaski County (Ky.) Sheriff’s Office released surveillance video of a train collision that happened north of Somerset, Ky.

A train collided with the truck just after 3 p.m. off a highway. The impact caused an explosion of fuel and a smoke plume that could be seen for several miles around.

According to authorities, the driver was watching the rear of his trailer to ensure his rear most wheels were not going to drop off the roadway. While watching the wheels of his rig, he took his eyes off the tracks and continued to pull forward without watching for approaching trains. The driver then drove his rig across the tracks into the path of the southbound Norfolk-Southern train.

That collision caused the fuel from the truck to burst into a fireball and fuel was sprayed on the front of the train causing extensive burn damage to the train engine.
