A 35-year-old Tacoma man fishing in the Green River Wednesday evening lost his footing and was swept away by the current, despite efforts by other fisherman to rescue him.

King County Sheriff’s Department Spokesman John Urquhart said the Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit recovered the man’s body at about 3 p.m. Thursday.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday identified the man as Andrey Kosiuga and listed his cause of death as “asphyxia due to fresh water drowning.”

The incident occurred about 6:20 p.m. near the 11200 block of the Auburn-Black Diamond Road off Highway 18, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office. Kosiuga was wading across the river with a friend in almost waist-deep water when he lost his footing and his hip-waders began to fill with water. Several people tried to reach out to him with their fishing poles, and at least one person jumped in after him, but the swift current took him. He was last seen as he floated into a log jam down river.
