The Sports Page Tavern was hopping last Friday as owners Kathy and Joe Mahoney held a raffle and silent auction to raise money for the family of Pierce County Deputy Kent Mundell.

Mundell was fatally shot Dec. 21 as he was responding to a domestic violence call.

As of Wednesday, the raffle and silent auction had raised $4,042.

“We fell a little shy of what we wanted, but we’re happy people gave what they did,” said Kathy Mahoney. “In these scary economic times, we’re pretty lucky.”

Pierce County Sheriff’s Detective Ed Troyer, who knew Mundell, was at the Sports Page Friday evening.

“It matters because it shows that people haven’t forgotten,” Troyer said of the raffle and auction. “It also shows that we are a lot closer to the community than the community thought we were than we thought the community was to us. Even though time is starting to pass, it’s good to see people rally and do these kinds of things and keep us in their hearts as we keep them in our hearts.”

“This is one of the most amazing events that the Sports Page has held so far, and it’s going to such a great cause, and there’s so many neat things that have been donated,” said Jamie McDonald, a friend of the Mahoney’s.

“Applebee’s and Fred Meyer donated, and so did Columbia Distributing and Anheuser-Busch, people and companies that we work with every day,” said Kathy Mahoney.

The Mahoneys were moved by a desire to do something for local officers who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty and originally for the families of the Lakewood officers slain in November. But the Lakewood Police Department told them it would like all funds to go to Mundells family instead.

“According to the Lakewood Police department, all the families and children of the four officers have been taken care of quite well, but there hasn’t been a lot that’s happened for Kent Mundell,” Kathy Mahoney said.

“I think the passion kind of came from that I’m a mom and my husband’s a dad,” Mahoney added. “A husband died and left six behind and left a legacy and a story. The problem for us is that we live in Lakewood and we have a business in Auburn, so we were just like what can we do? So how can we bring it into Auburn?”

The names of all donors will be listed in a letter attached to the final check. The check will be hand delivered to the Lakewood Police Department and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
