A two-alarm fire destroyed a house and damaged two other buildings and an empty tanker truck at a fuel company in Auburn.

The South King County Fire Investigation Task Force determined the cause of the early Wednesday morning fire to be accidental in nature. An electrical wiring malfunction started the fire, which began inside a wall of the living room at the home, located at 217 3rd St. NW and adjacent to Don Small and Sons Oil Distribution Co.

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

VRFA firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 12:22 a.m., finding a home on fire and a fuel tanker truck threatened by the flames. Thirty-three firefighters from the VRFA, Kent and South King Fire and Rescue focused on cooling the truck and extinguishing the residence fire.

While the Auburn Police Department evacuated several homes and a nearby apartment building, fire crews focused on simultaneously cooling the tanker truck and extinguishing the structure fire.

Officials said the home was a complete loss, with damage estimated at $275,000. One man rented the home, living there with his dog. The owner of the home has provided another rental unit for the displaced man.

The fuel tanker truck, owned by Don Small and Sons, sustained significant heat damage. In addition, a neighboring house sustained heat and smoke damage to the siding, roof and windows.

Upon returning from work, the man saw flames coming from the home and made an attempt to enter and rescue his dog. He was unable to enter due to the intense heat and smoke from the fire. VRFA firefighters later found the dog deceased in the home.
