Authorities are working to solve a string of suspected arsons that have hit area businesses and homes this fall.
VRFA and police representatives will offer suggestions for residents to reduce the chances of their homes falling victim to a fire.
Safety tips include:
• Clear all trash and combustible materials away from the exterior of your home.
• Trim shrubbery and trees so they do not contact your home; clean up leaves and other debris next to your residence.
• Ensure all outdoor lighting and any security cameras are in working order. Keep outside lights on at night.
• Lock all doors and windows in your home, garage, storage shed and any other structures.
• Check smoke alarms and fire extinguishers to be sure they are working.
• Ensure your family has a home fire escape plan and has practiced it.
• Be alert for any suspicious activity and activate block watch programs with your neighbors. Call 911 if you see suspicious activity taking place.
• Report any arson related information to the arson hotline at 1-800-55-Arson. Callers will remain anonymous. Citizens may also call the Auburn Police Department tip line at 253-288-7403.
