VRFA’s O’Brien, Fisher earn top honors

The Valley Regional Fire Authority recently honored Capt. Kevin O’Brien and Firefighter Kyle Fisher with top awards for 2008.

O’Brien earned the VRFA’s Officer of the Year Award for his outstanding leadership and efforts to establish a central stores facility for the department and his behind-the-scene work in procuring, maintaining and inventorying department tools and equipment.

Fisher was named the Firefighter of the Year for his extensive knowledge, upbeat personality, strong work ethic and natural abilities as an instructor.

O’Brien and Fisher were presented medals and letters of commendation.

During the nomination process, fellow firefighters cited O’Brien’s consistent leadership, compassion and positive attitude as his greatest attributes. O’Brien began his career as a firefighter in 1991 with the Auburn Fire Department and was promoted to captain in 1998.

Fisher, a medical specialist, played an integral part in providing emergency medical training to the department’s newest firefighters and seasoned veterans.

In addition, medals of commendation were awarded to Capt. Norm Golden and Firefighter Jeremiah Mushen for lifesaving actions during the Fremont 5K run last June. Their quick action and selfless attitudes during their off-duty time saved the life of a Seattle man who suffered a heart attack during the race.

Medals of commendation are presented for exemplary performance of duties during fire operations or for outstanding contributions to improving and continuing a high level of service to citizens. Persons considered for this award must have performed above the normal range expected their responsibilities.

Letters of commendation also were awarded to Firefighters Gregg Peterson and Troy Kilcup for developing and delivering the first VRFA pump academy. In the past, this training has been outsourced. Peterson and Kilcup delivered a comprehensive and professional program.

“Gregg and Troy met the challenge” said Administrator Eric Robertson, “and delivered a program that will benefit the VRFA employees and ultimately the citizens or the VRFA service area for years to come.”
