The Road Map Region – composed of Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, Seattle, and Tukwila school districts – has identified the day after Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as the opening week for kindergarten registration.

A new website has been launched to assist families with the process.

The website (www.KRegNow.org) helps families with the process by providing information on how to register your child for kindergarten, what you will need to bring with you, and the contact information for each of the seven districts. In addition, materials on the website are provided in 14 languages.

“We’ve designed an easy-to-use website as a great resource to help families with the process of kindergarten enrollment. We will continue to add resources to the page to support families and students as they enter elementary school,” said Mary Waldron, P-3 Systems program manager.

Registration began on Jan. 19 with area school districts providing information on kindergarten registration and engaging incoming families. Efforts to spread the word about early registration via school districts and community partners will continue through summer.

Early kindergarten registration, a key strategy in the region’s Race to the Top Start Strong work, is critical for several reasons. Chief among them is laying the foundation for positive and ongoing relationships between schools and families.

To help eliminate the opportunity gap and ensure success for each child, PSESD (Puget Sound Educational Service District), with support of a $40 million, federal Race to the Top District grant, in partnership with school districts in the South King County region, is helping increase school readiness for students and families by developing strategies that span the entire spectrum of support.

“There is a lot we can and are doing to increase school readiness. These efforts range from funding more high-quality learning environments to creating smoother transitions into kindergarten,” said Waldron. “One way to support smoother transitions is through more aligned registration systems, and promoting and supporting early kindergarten registration.”
