Sept. 3 was the first day of school for students in grades 1-12 in the Auburn School District, while Sept. 8 is the first day for kindergarteners.
That’s a combined 17,800 students at 24 schools from preschool through 12th grade.
Here are a few new features.
This year, the ASD is launching a cellphone-free learning environment that will prohibit students from using personal electronic devices (PEDs) during class time. These devices include, but are not limited to, cellphones, smart watches, ear buds and headphones.
According to the ASD, this change is based on research showing that reducing phone use improves focus, academic performance, social connections and reduces bullying, reflecting the district’s commitment to creating classrooms where students thrive distraction-free.
Safety and security upgrades include secure entry vestibules, a new card-access system for exterior doors, and security fencing.
Superintendent Alan Spicciati said the following on ASD’s website.
“Our vision is that each student will have an educational experience in which they are seen and valued for who they are now, while developing their full academic and social potential to prepare them for the future they choose. Everyone in the ASD is working to fulfill this vision for our students.” Spicciati said.
“We are a student-centered, learning-focused, and community-owned school district. We join together to support the success and well-being of every student in partnership with our incredibly supportive Auburn community,” Spicciati said.
