The Washington State Patrol crime lab has tested the blood found Wednesday on flooring and clothing on the south side of Peasley Canyon Drive and determined that it is human, according to the Auburn Police Department.

An off-duty federal agent driving on Peasley Canyon Road on Wednesday afternoon spotted a fire in the woods and had stopped and gotten out of his car to put it out with his extinguisher when he saw a man next to a dark SUV, burning what turned out to be blood-soaked carpeting, towels and flooring along the roadside.

When the man saw the agent, according to police, he jumped in the SUV and fled westbound.

“The officer got back in his car and tried to get close enough to get a license plate and wasn’t able to catch up, so he came back,” said Auburn Assistant Police Chief Bill Pierson.

Firefighters from the Valley Regional Fire Authority were called in to help put out the fire, Pierson said. Detectives processed the scene and asked the Washington State Patrol crime lab for additional processing.

The agent described the suspect as perhaps a mixed race man, in his late 20s to early 30s, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10, with a thin build and short dark hair.

As of Friday afternoon, Auburn Police investigators continued to receive tips from citizens and track down viable leads.

“The only scene where evidence of a crime was found is the original Peasley Canyon scene where the bloody flooring was found,” said Auburn Police Cmdr. Mike Hirman. “We are working diligently to find other evidence and a possible victim. These efforts have led us to other locations, based on the tips coming in.”
