WSP to increase patrols during Memorial Day Weekend

Puget Sound area Troopers will be out in force during Memorial Day weekend searching for drivers who are putting other motorists at risk.

From Friday through Monday, approximately 75 extra troopers will patrol the roadways looking for drivers who are speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and those who fail to buckle up. Troopers also will be on the lookout out for vehicles carrying unsecured loads.

The public is encouraged to call 911 if they spot aggressive or impaired drivers. The license plate number and a description of the vehicle will be helpful in assisting troopers in locating the offenders. The WSP also will be using aircraft to crack down on aggressive and impaired drivers.

Each year too many people are victimized by impaired and aggressive drivers. The WSP is committed to making our roadways as safe as possible for all motorists.

“The WSP is asking motorists to slow down and allow extra time to get to their destinations. Traffic volumes increase dramatically during holiday weekends and we ask that drivers exercise patience while driving. We also ask that motorists be aware of the increase in motorcycle riders this weekend as they are more difficult to see,” said Captain Stephen Burns.

If you are traveling this weekend and plan to consume alcoholic beverages, make plans to call a friend, a cab or designate a safe driver and always remember to buckle up. If you are towing a trailer be sure it is secured properly for your safety and the safety of those around you.
