DEXTER DUANE CARINO

DEXTER DUANE CARINO

Dexter Duane Carino, known fondly by friends as “Jack,” left the physical world on December 1, 2009 at his home in Federal Way, Washington. Born on November 2, 1955 in Waipahu, Hawaii to Andrew and Rose Cariño, Dexter was the fourth child of eight – six sisters, Glenda, Debbie, Lily, Paula, Cheryl and Andrea, and younger brother, Andy, Jr.In 1976, Dexter married high school sweetheart Christie Bergen, and they had two children, Stephanie (age 28) and Justin (age 25). Stephanie and Justin were the brightest source of joy and light in Dexter’s life. And the light became stronger after the birth of Stephanie’s children, Gavin and Elijah. Later, when Justin brought girlfriend Casey and her daughter, Kaelani into the family, Dexter welcomed them with open arms. He loved his children and grandchildren more than they will ever know. This Thanksgiving, he was especially excited to hear that Justin and Casey are expecting twin sons in the spring of 2010. Dexter cherished his large, extended family of nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, cousins, aunts and uncles, including many relatives in Hawaii. He also remained close to the Bergen family and to lifelong friends, Mike Smith and Steve Snyder, their friendship dating back to grade school. As a wonderful and exuberant singer, songwriter, and musician, Dexter inspired Stephanie, Justin, and many siblings, nieces and nephews to become musicians. He taught and learned music by example. During many memorable jam sessions that sometimes lasted into the early morning hours Dexter always encouraged everyone to sing and play along. Beginners were always welcomed to join. As a loyal employee of Ranger Boats in Federal Way, he worked as a master boatbuilding craftsman for over 35 years. He was a hard worker and took pride in the boats he built. Dexter was also a humble and gentle man who loved animals and the outdoors. His beloved dog Lexington was always at his side. After the death of his only brother, Andy, Jr. in 2007, Dexter made sure to end conversations with a heartfelt, “I love you.” We love you too, Dex. We’ll miss your songs, stories, laughter, and non-judging acceptance for all. You will always be in our hearts. Rest in peace, Jack. A celebration of Dexter’s life will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Burr residence, 31312 49th Ave S, Auburn, WA.
