Dr. Kenneth A. Smith died of natural causes on January 1, 2009. Born October 8, 1921. He was a lifelong resident of Auburn, his wife of 18 years, Violet M. (McGrath) Smith, died May 1, 2006. He leaves three children, Kenneth M. Smith, Trenna S. Adams, Teresa E. Rutledge and also three stepdaughters and a stepson, Kelly McGrath, as well as many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents Albert E. and Edna M. Smith and two brothers, Lewis E. and W. Mel Macdonald. His paternal grandparents, early settlers in Auburn, opened and operated E.J. Macdonalds Dry Goods and Clothing Store on West Main Street from 1908 until their deaths during WWII. Along with parents and grandparents, he was active in Auburn White River Presbyterian Church.Like many other Auburn railroad families, Ken’s family divided time between homes in Auburn and the small Northern Pacific Railway town of Lester WA – a relationship he trea-sured all his life. A 1939 graduate of Auburn High School, he was also a graduate of the University of Washington, of Pacific University in Oregon, and was a C.L.U. (Chartered Life Underwriter) He attended Whitman college, Walla Walla, Washington (Naval Training) and served almost 5 years in the United States Navy, and was discharged with the rank of Ensign. He and Vi enjoyed trailering, camping, fishing, in British Colum-bia and spending part of many winters in Quartzsite, Arizona.There will be a grave-site committal service at Mt. View Cemetery, Auburn, Saturday, 1-10-2009 at 11:00 am., followed by refreshments at 12:00 at Wesley Homes, Retirement Community, 32049-109th Pl S.E. Auburn, across Porters Bridge, up hill, thru light, 2nd light, right (105th) right at 109th. (12-2)
