With five new title sponsors on board, a rejuvenated Washington Cup XI feature six stakes races – each worth $50,000 – on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Emerald Downs.

Fifty-three horses are nominated to the revamped extravaganza, led by a record 10 nominations from Washington Hall of Fame Trainer Jim Penney.

The new sponsorships have raised the Cup’s aggregate stakes purses to $300,000, a substantial raise from the $215,000 offered the last several years. New title sponsors include Northwest Farms, Daily Racing Form, Comcast SportsNet, Jim Beam and Pegasus Training Center.

The $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, carded for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles, figures to offer one of the day’s most exciting match ups: Longacres Mile second-place finisher Stryker Phd and Mile fourth-place finisher Jebrica could decide honors as the meet’s Top Washington-bred. Until You, seventh in The Mile and winner over Winning Machine in a $30,000 allowance race on September 1, also is nominated.

The $50,000 Pegasus Training Center Stakes for older fillies and mares also offers an intriguing showdown, if both defending champion Cielator and Emerald Distaff winner E Z Kitty are entered in the 1 1/16 mile test.

Washington Cup offers one-mile races for 3-year-olds, the $50,000 Jim Beam Stakes, and 3-year-old fillies, the $50,000 Comcast SportsNet Stakes. And 2-year-olds get their chance in six-furlong tests, with colts and geldings in the $50,000 Daily Racing Form Dennis Dodge Stakes and fillies in the $50,000 Northwest Farms Stakes.

Entries for all six Washington Cup races will be drawn Thursday morning at the Quarter Chute Café.
