For the Reporter

An evenly matched group of 13 3-year-old fillies is nominated to Sunday’s $50,000 Irish Day Handicap at one mile.

Chu and You, practically invincible last year as a 2-year-old, is assigned high weight of 119 lbs for the Irish Day, the second stop en route to the $65,000 Washington Oaks on Aug. 9.

A Washington-bred daughter of You and I, Chu and You rebounded with a big runner-up effort in the June 1 Seattle Handicap, resisting gamely when headed by highly regarded California invader City by the Bay. Chu and You dropped a three-quarter-length decision to City by the Bay, but showed the brilliant speed that led to three stakes wins and honors as the track’s Top 2-Year-Old Filly of 2013. Chu and You’s biggest obstacle Sunday might be distance, as the Irish Day mark’s her debut at a route distance.

The rapidly improving Find Your Spot was given second high weight of 118 pounds. Claimed for $25,000 in her career debut last September, the daughter of Nationhood has won three straight races and four of her last five, including a 25-to-1 stunner February 28 at Santa Anita. The Irish Day also marks her two-turn debut, and her first start in a stakes.

Strawberry Dawn, Sunpenny and Belladiva all were stakes placed as 2-year-olds, while Mylast Sweet Pea finished third at 50-to-1 to City by the Bay and Chu and You in the Seattle.

Trainer Tom Wenzel, winner of a record three straight Irish Days with Elusive Noise, Exclusive Diva and Stopshoppingdebbie, nominated Quiet Wisdom and Timeless Pleasure to this year’s race.
