Auburn Mountainview came away with a 2-2, extra-innings tie against Newport at the High School Baseball Classic last Saturday at Safeco Field.
The Knights (7-1-1 overall) opened up the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning, and the Lions (6-1-1 overall, 4-0 league) wasted no time responding with a run in the top of the third inning.
Both teams added a run in the sixth. Neither team was able to push a runner home in the next two innings, so umpires called the game complete after the eighth inning.
Newport finished with eight hits and four errors, and Auburn Mountainview notched five hits and committed two errors.
Senior Josh Swanson had a triple and an RBI for the Lions. Senior Jeffery Morgan added an RBI, and junior Garrett Neiss stole a base and scored a run.
Alex Gleason, James Kisling, Mason Cerrillo and Hudson Byorick also notched hits in the game.
The Lions used five pitchers, including Gleason, Blake Mallory, Cerrillo, Ikaika Nahaku and Justin Marsden.
Marsden, a senior, gave up two hits and had five strikeouts in two innings of work.
Auburn Mountainview hosts Sumner (8-1, 4-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.
