The third-ranked Auburn Mountainview boys water polo team snagged the East Division title last week with an 18-6 win over district rival Auburn.

The Lions, who finished the regular season with a 13-1 record, begin play in the state tournament Nov. 7 at either Rogers or Lakes high schools. The playoffs will culminate Nov. 9 and 10 at Curtis High School in University Place.

Against Auburn, Daniel Kim, Owen Lempert and Jeriah Kieswether had three goals apiece for the Lions. Hunter Arnold, Garrett Neiss and Riley King added two goals each and Jonah Kathlean, Luke Lavine and Matt Lipinski each scored one.

“This is an amazing group of boys,” Lions coach Justin Pritchard said. “This group went out and worked really hard in the offseason. I’m very proud of them.

“We’re still a young team but we’re heading in the right direction,” Pritchard said. “We’ve had a lot of the boys really mature during the season, and there is a very good chance at winning state for our boys.”

For the Trojans, Levi Golan had three goals and Nathan Scholzen chipped in with two goals. Jesse Unzen added a goal.

No. 6 Auburn Riverside, which finished second in the East Division, also will compete ini the state tournament.

“Auburn Riverside is really good. It’s kind of neat to see both teams in the state tournament,” Pritchard added.
