Auburn Riverside baseball completes season sweep of district rival Auburn with 10-9 victory

For the first time in 14 seasons the Auburn Riverside baseball squad has swept both regular season meetings with their cross-town rival Auburn.

On Wednesday the Ravens (5-9 league, 6-11 overall) defeated the Trojans (3-11, 4-14) 10-9 at Auburn Riverside.

Auburn struck first in the first inning, with centerfielder Clayton Brown capitalizing on a Raven throwing error to get on base, then scoring the first run of the game on a Travis Hagel sacrifice fly.

Riverside responded in their half of the frame, mounting a two-out rally and scoring five times in the inning. Ryan Adams, R.J. Gius, Cameron Grad, Kell Garrison and Casey Allen all had one RBI apiece in the inning.

The Ravens pounced on Trojan reliever Marshall Klontz, in for starter Andrew Sansom, in the second inning scoring four runs in the inning. Gius added two RBIs on a single and Taylor Maples had a two RBIs on a double.

Auburn staged a comeback in the third inning, with Hagel driving in two runs on a single and Brown scoring a run when Sansom was hit by a pitch.

The Trojans added four runs in the fourth inning with Jordan Berens doubling and later scoring on a throwing error. Brown added an RBI and scored a run on an error and Sansom notched an RBI single.

Michael Sherwin added an RBI for the Ravens in the fourth inning and Trojan Bret Renschler scored on a balk in the fifth inning to round out scoring for the game.

Sansom was tagged with the loss with one inning of work, giving up three hits, seven runs, walking six and striking out two.

Maples was awarded the win, his first of the season, with his three innings of work in relief.

The Trojans were led offensively by Hagel who was 1-for-3 from the dish with three RBIs and a double. Brown was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

For the Ravens, Gius was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Taylor Maples added two RBIs.

The Ravens are currently in sixth-place in the South Puget Sound League North and will close out the season with a 4 p.m. game Monday at Kentlake (8-6, 9-6).

Auburn will finish up the regular season at 4 p.m. Monday at Kentwood (12-3, 13-3). The Trojans are in eighth-place in league.
