The Auburn Riverside girls survived a rocky fourth quarter to move by the Issaquah Eagles, 58-40 and earn a shot at the Washington State 4A Girls title in Saturday nights main event.

The Ravens (28-0) looked to have the semi-final game in hand at the end of three quarters, with a commanding 40-28 lead. Issaquah had other plans, however, taking advantage of Riverside miscues and surging in the early minutes of the fourth quarter.

Eagle guard Mackenzie Schiltz hit back-to-back three-pointers, and Brooke Miller added another trey to bring Issaquah to within four at 41-37.

“We played well for 26-minutes of the game,” Riverside coach Terry Johnson said. “They’re a good team and we knew they were going to make a run. We just had to settle down and gain our composure.”

After a Raven timeout, senior Mercedes Wetmore put a end to the Eagles’ upset ambitions with a three-point play, however, capitalizing on a Jalea Crump steal. The University of Washington-bound Wetmore scored 11 of her 17 points in the quarter. Junior Kat Cooper added four points and a crucial steal and assist in the frame.

“I was thinking that this what every player looks for, what every team plays for,” Wetmore said. “We were hoping they weren’t going to come back on us, but they stepped up and started hitting big threes. But we fought back. That just goes to show the fight we have on this team.”

“I was disappointed that we weren’t getting after their shooters, because we had been doing it all night,” Johnson said. “We knew they could shoot the ball. But again, good teams are going to fight back during a game. Issaquah wasn’t going to quit playing the game. We just need to give them some credit for making some good plays.”

Issaquah ended the game with 24 percent shooting from the floor, with Miller leading the team with 14 points and four three-pointers.

Wetmore and Cooper finished the game with 17 points apiece, with Cooper adding 11 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Wetmore also had four rebounds and three assists. Senior Kara Jenkins added six rebounds and Taylor Wofford had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Ravens shot 52 percent as a team.

Now the Ravens will move on the Washington State 4A girls title game, at 9 p.m. Saturday against the Mead Panthers.

“The big one is tomorrow,” Wetmore said. “I haven’t been there in two years. I’m excited about it. The team is excited about it. Our team has a lot of young kids that haven’t been there and I know they are going to enjoy the feeling. If we can get this one down, I know it’s going to be the best feeling, no one will ever forget it.”
