Auburn Riverside’s Rebecca Turnbow snags fifth in all-around at state gymnastics 4A meet

Auburn Riverside junior Rebecca Turnbow proved what she could do with two good ankles this weekend at the Washington State 4A gymnastics championship at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.

A healthy Turnbow – who suffered ankle injuries at the state meet and the district meet last season – powered her way to a fifth-place, 37.0 point all-around finish.

“I expected about what I did,” Turnbow said. “I just did my routine, focused on each event, tried not to get too ahead myself and pulled it all together at the end.”

In addition to her all-around finish, Turnbow also was sterling during Saturday’s individual event finals, where she captured second-place on the bars with a 9.525 score and tied for fifth on the beam, despite a little case of nerves.

“I just get jittery on beam,” Turnbow said. “I was fine and then got really nervous. And what that happens the end of the beam seems to get really close.”

It didn’t seem to hurt her score too much, however. Turnbow scored 9.575 points, good enough for a fifth-place tie with Puyallup’s Chelsey Haskey.

Turnbow just missed the cut for Saturday’s individual floor exercise wiht a 11th place, 9.425 point finish.
