The Auburn, Auburn Riverside and Auburn Mountainview wrestling squads will be well represented at this weekend’s regional competitions with 21 wrestlers and two alternates moving on for their chance to qualify for the Washington State Mat Classic championship tourney.
For Auburn, ten wrestlers, including three first-place finishers, qualifed out of the South Puget Sound League North 4A meet at Kent-Meridian High School.
Kelly Maughan (130), Dylan Rutledge (171) and Nick Conlan (285) all captured first in their respective weight classes. Willie Pineda (130) and Chris Young qualified for next week’s 4A regional meet at Auburn High School with second-place finishes. Also moving on will be third-place finishers Nick Courtney (152), Larenzo Freeman (171) and Danny Shelton (285). Brian Alonzo (103) and Adam Garcia (145) also earned a chance to qualify for the state championship.
As a team the Auburn squad came home with a second-place team finish with 288.5 points. Tahoma ran away with the meet title with a 391.5 score.
Auburn Riverside will move on three wrestlers and one alternate to the regionals, with Keaton Dalfrey (135), Jason Greely (152) and Derek Clarke (285) moving on. Zach Platt (215) will go as an alternate.
The Ravens were eighth out of nine teams with 115 points.
At the South Puget Sound League 3A sub-district meet, the Auburn Mountainview wrestlers finished third with 214.5 team points, behind Enumclaw with 388.5 and White River with 350.5 points.
The Lions will move on eight wrestlers and one alternate to next week’s regional meet at Mt. Rainier High School in Des Moines.
Matt Anderson (112), Drew Dacey (130) and TJ Peretti (130) all grabbed first place finishes at the tourney, with Tyke Reid (103), Tyler King (152) and Zach Huyber (189) all grabbing second place finishes. Also moving on will be Patrick Peterson (160), Lucas Huyber (171) and alternate Brandon Perry (112).
The West Central District III 3A Regional wresting meet gets underway at 10 a.m. this Saturday at Mount Rainier High School in Des Moines. The top-four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the Mat Classic state meet, conducted Feb. 19-20 at the Tacoma Dome.
The West Central District III 4A Regionals begins at 5 p.m. this Friday at Auburn High School and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday. The top-5 wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for Mat Classic.
