Rebounding from a previous crash at South Sound Speedway, Auburn's Tyler Tanner guided his Chevrolet to a pair of 50-lap super late model victories around Rochester's 3/8th-mile oval.

Rebounding from a previous crash at South Sound Speedway, Auburn’s Tyler Tanner guided his Chevrolet to a pair of 50-lap super late model victories around Rochester’s 3/8th-mile oval.

The Twin 50 wins on May 28 were the first in the super late model division for the 19-year-old second-generation driver, an Auburn High School graduate and Arizona State University student who is studying mechanical engineering.

Starting from the back of the pack, Tanner weaved his way to the front, grabbing the lead on lap 15. He cruised the rest of the way to the checkered flag.

In the second feature, Tanner won from an inverted start, pulling away to a half-lap lead on Bob Presley and seizing the victory.

For Tanner, it was a satisfying comeback from an April 16 crash at the track. But with help and donations from friends and sponsors, Tanner and the No. 65 Chevrolet returned to top form.

Tanner, son of Kelly and LeAnne Tanner, of Auburn, is a three-time quarter-midget national champion. At age 15, he drove his quarter-midget to the Gasoline Alley Championship at Indianapolis. He has been racing competitively since age 4 1/2.

Tanner’s father is a two-time Northwest Tour champion.

In stock cars, Tanner was the rookie of the year at South Sound Speedway in 2009 and its most improved driver a season ago.

The Tanner Motorsports crew plans to continue racing at NASCAR-affiliated big ovals at South Sound Speedway, Spokane County Raceway, Yakima Speedway and Evergreen Speedway for the remainder of the season as long as the team can acquire proper funding.

King’s Transmission of Seattle, and Olympic Trailer Sales of Olympia sponsor the team.

Tanner’s next scheduled stop is Saturday at South Sound Speedway before the Big West Twins 50s on the big oval at Monroe’s Evergreen Speedway on June 25.

Tanner is awaiting NASCAR approval to compete in the July 29 Camping World Truck Series race at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Raceway.
