Green River women earn first soccer playoff victory

The Green River Community College women's soccer team notched the program's first-ever playoff victory on Wednesday, defeating Yakima Valley 2-0 in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges action on the Gators' home pitch at Wilson Playfields in Kent.

The Gators (12-4-4) advance to play Clackamas Community College (10-5-1) in the NWAACC quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Saturday at Oregon City, Ore.

Green River jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead, courtesy of goals by Aleix Mueller and Kentlake graduate Lynze Utz. Julie Heltne and Rayssa Lira added assists.

The Gators held on in the second half despite losing goalkeeper Cassy Duschel, who was knocked out of the contest after colliding with a Yakima Valley player in the box.

Bonney Lake graduate Leslie Cannon proved up to the task, preserving the shutout between the pipes. Sweeper Cheyenne Gautney, an Auburn Riverside graduate, provided strong defense.

The playoff appearance is the first for the Gator women since 2007.
