Jockey Gallyn Mitchell is recuperating from a heart attack suffered Monday at his home near Enumclaw.

The track’s all-time leader in wins, stakes wins and earnings, Mitchell remains at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center, where he had three stents implanted during an emergency procedure Monday.

Tuesday, wife and jockey’s agent Denise Mitchell said her husband remained in the Intensive Care Unit, but added his spirits were good and that he was seeing visitors.

“So far, so good,” Denise Mitchell said. “They could move him out of ICU soon.”

Mitchell, 50, has ridden 1,347 winners at Emerald Downs and 2,634 overall. A two-time winner of the Longacres Mile and a 2013 finalist for the Washington Racing Hall of Fame, Mitchell is the only jockey to ride all 18 seasons at Emerald Downs, including seven mounts opening weekend.

Denise Mitchell said doctors would monitor Gallyn and then determine if more surgery was necessary.

Torres suffers ankle injury

Also Monday, jockey J. Luis Torres sustained a fractured right ankle in a training accident and will be sidelined indefinitely.

Torres, who rode two winners here Sunday, was scheduled to see a specialist Tuesday, possibly to determine if a plate and screws are necessary to properly heal the ankle.

A 28-year-old native of Mexico, Torres was the leading rider at the 2012 Portland Meadows meeting, and also has won titles at Sun Downs in Washington, and Grants Pass, Tillamook and Prineville in Oregon.

Jockey Leonel Camacho-Flores also had a training mishap Monday that required a hospital visit, but X-rays on a possible ankle injury were negative. David Singer, agent for Camacho-Flores, said the jockey would ride Friday when racing resumes at Emerald Downs.
