Lion boys earn share of SPSL 3A track and field title

The Auburn Mountainview boys track and field team defeated Peninsula this past week to win a share of the South Puget Sound League 3A title, the first ever for the team. The Lions were paced by senior distance runner Chris Scharer, who has been perfect this year, finishing first in all of his SPSL 3A races in the 400-, 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races this season. Scharer posted a 2-minute, 9.20-second mark in the 800 against Peninsula. His best time in the event this season is a 1:58 ran against Enumclaw, good for ninth in the state 3A ranks.

Also keying the team’s success is senior thrower Nicholas Aumua, who has the third best discus distance in the state 3A ranks, with a 159-feet, 7-inch toss. Aumua finished third at the state meet this past season with a 153-1.00.

Senior Devin Bryant is currently tied for seventh in the 3A state leader boards in the long jump with a 21-5.25.

The Lions travelled to Decatur on Wednesday to take on the Gators, with results unavailable at press time. A win secures sole possession of first-place in league for Auburn Mountainview.

Also on track for a strong finish are the Lion girls team, who battled Decatur on Wednesday for second-place in the SPSL 3A. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Auburn Mountainview girls are led by junior Nicole Carter, who has the fifth best 100 time in the state in 3A with a 12.54.

Sophomore Heaven Palaita is 10th in state 3A ranks in the discus with a 112-4.00 toss, and junior Rachel Greve is sixth in the javelin with a 118-7.00.

Both the Auburn Mountainview boys and girls will compete at the SPSL/Seamount 3A subdistrict meet May 9 and 11 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
