Auburn Mountainview ended its season with a fifth-place finish at the Washington State Boys Water Polo Championships at the Curtis Aquatic Center in University Place last weekend.

The Lions, who won the East Division title during the regular season with a 9-1 record, went 2-2 at the state tourney.

After opening with a 19-3 loss to host Curtis, Auburn Mountainview beat division rival Kentridge 14-6 to stay alive in the consolation bracket.

On the second day of the tourney, the Lions fell 23-6 to powerhouse Mercer Island before beating Wilson 12-10 to take fifth.

Bellevue came out on top at the tournament, winning its fourth consecutive state title, with Curtis, Mercer Island and Roosevelt rounding out the top four.

Lions coach Justin Pritchard praised his boys for their efforts.

“Last year we had more talent. The skill was out of this world, but maybe the team attitude wasn’t there,” Pritchard said. “This year, what we lacked in ability or skill we made up in teamwork. I think that’s been the reason for our success. The boys really get along very well. I go home and I’m happy at night. I don’t have to stress that some of the players aren’t getting along. It makes my job a lot easier.”

Pritchard continued:

“It’s been a real good season for us,” Pritchard said. “We lost a lot of players last year but had nine seniors this year. But we look good for the future still. We’ll be tough for a few years.”
