PREP FOOTBALL: Three Auburn football players suspended for athletic code violations

Three players of the undefeated Auburn Trojans football team have been suspended for athletic code violations, according to Auburn High School Principal Richard Zimmerman.

Zimmerman said the suspensions stem from an incident that happened Saturday evening.

“There was an incident prior to the homecoming dance, it did not happen at the school,” Zimmerman said.

“One of the kids came in and it was apparent there was something wrong,” he added.

Zimmerman declined to comment on specifics of the offense, but said the districts athletic code, available here, “gives a general outline of what Auburn does. That states what the sanctions are.”

Zimmerman did not comment or offer the names of the players suspended, but told the Tacoma News Tribune: “It will be obvious at the game who was suspended.”

The Trojans play their first postseason game – after finishing the regular season as the South Puget Sound League North 4A champions with a 9-0 overall record – hosting Kamiak (4-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Tribune also cited multiple sources who named senior running back Chris Young as one of the players. Young, who has verbally committed to play at the University of Washington, has rushed for 1,424 yards and 26 touchdowns this season and is a integral part of the Trojans’ defensive secondary.

“It’s extremely unfortunate,” Zimmerman said, “but we’re working through it. Hopefully this students will have learned something from this.”

The district’s athletic code, which is signed by all high school athletes playing sports for Auburn, Auburn Riverside and Auburn Mountainview, lays out disciplinary action for drug or alcohol use, being present at a place where drugs or alcohol are being consumed, tobacco use, not obeying school rules or regulations and getting suspended for school.

The first violation for the use of drugs or alcohol carries a suspension of 25 days or the remainder of the season, whichever is longer. Merely attending a function where alcohol or drugs are being consumed requires a 15-day suspension for first time violators.

Auburn coach Gordon Elliott was instructed not to comment on the incident.
