Ravens snatch fourth place at Washington State 4A fastpitch tourney

The Auburn Riverside softball team capped their 2009 campaign with a fourth-place finish at the Washington State 4A championship softball tourney this past weekend in Tacoma.

The Ravens went 3-2 in the tourney, with their only losses coming at the hands of eventual state champion Kelso and third-place Walla Walla

In the first round the Ravens overpowered Lake Washington 5-0, feasting on four fielding errors by the Vikings.

University of Washington-bound senior Amanda Fitzsimmons earned the win with 11 strikeouts and also added a double and an RBI from the dish.

Hannah Melick added a triple and an RBI and Jamie Koeing chipped in with a double and an RBI.

In the second round the Ravens slipped by Walla Walla 4-3 with a seventh inning rally. Fitzsimmons was again awarded the win and Melick led the way offensively with 2-of-3 hitting with a triple and an RBI. Koenig added an RBI and Shannon Keith had two RBIs in the win.

In their next game, Kelso managed a last inning rally, with Karina Paavola singling home the winning run to defeat the Ravens 4-3. Fitzsimmons was tagged for the loss and was 2-of-4 with two singles. First baseman Sheldon Doyle had a single and a double and was also 2-of-4 from teh plate.

Now in the consolation bracket the Ravens unloaded on Mountain View in their fourth-round game, defeating the Thunder 4-0. Fitzsimmons earned the win with Melick going 3-of-3 with three doubles and two runs and Jamie Koeing and Ashley Frasher each adding an RBI single.

A rematch against Walla Walla in the battle for third place went the Blue Devils way, with Auburn Riverside falling 4-1. Aslynn Mundo had the Raven’s only RBI and Sheldon Doyle chipped in with a double.

The Ravens finish the season with a 23-6 overall record.
