BASKETBALL

AUBURN PARKS YOUTH PROGRAM

This Auburn Parks program is for boys and girls in grades 2-10. Skills covered include shooting, dribbling, passing, one-on-one perimeter and post moves, rebounding, on-ball defense, team defense, increasing vertical leap and quickness, how to train on your own, and sports psychology. The program will run on Wednesday evenings at Rainier Middle School in Auburn. The next session is set for Nov. 11-Dec. 9 for boys in grades 2-5 (6-7 p.m.) and girls in 4-7 (7-8 p.m.), with a cost of $50 for Auburn residents and $63 for non-residents. A two-hour Wednesday session at Rainier on the same dates will be offered for boys in grades 2-5 and girls in grades 4-7 from 6-8 p.m., with a cost of $85 for Auburn residents and $107 for non-residents. The program also will run on Thursday evenings at Mount Baker Middle School in Auburn from Nov. 12-Dec. 10 for boys in grades 6-9 (6-7 p.m.) and girls in grades 8-10 (7-8 p.m.), at a cost of $50 for Auburn residents and $63 for non-residents. A two-hour session is set for Thursdays at Mount Baker (6-8 p.m.) for boys in grades 2-5 and girls in grades 4-7, at a cost of $85 for Auburn residents and $107 for non-residents. AUBURN PARKS ADULT WINTER LEAGUE

This is a 5-on-5 league with officials, awards and playoffs. Teams will play 10 games in either the National League (Mondays from 6:30-7:20 p.m.) or Continental League (Tuesdays from 6:30-7:20 p.m.). League play begins Jan. 11, 2010, and continue through March 22 (National) and March 23 (Continental). All players must be 18 or older. The team entry fee is $650, and is due by Dec. 2. FISHING

INTRODUCTION TO WINTER STEELHEADING

This classroom session is set for Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Kent Seniors Activities Center. The cost is $25. Topics will include tackle, equipment, how to rig up, and which lures or baits to use, as well as information on local and regional rivers, and where and when to fish them. A resource manual is included. An optional outing, at a cost of $50, will be offered on Saturday, Dec. 5, on the Green, Snoqualmie or Skykomish River (depending on conditions) to try hooking a winter steelhead.

WESTERN WASHINGTON WALLEYE CLUB

AUBURN PARKS PROGRAMS

The BOYS ROCKETMAN program for boys ages 4-6 will offer beginning tumbling and apparatus exercises, with emphasis on coordination, balance and concentration. The MIGHTY STARS program is for boys and girls ages 5-6, with the same focus as the Rocketman program. No previous gymnastics experience is required for either program. BEGINNING GYMNASTICS

This class offered by Auburn Parks teaches beginning levels of gymnastics, with focus on muscle control, flexibility, power and coordination. HOLIDAY CAMP

This camp for boys and girls ages 6-12 will be offered Dec. 28-30 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. each day at Hart’s Gymnastics Center, 4520 B St. N.W., Suite C, in Auburn. The focus will be on fun and the opportunity to work on some gymnastics skills. Campers should bring their own lunch each day. The cost is $100 for Auburn residents and $125 for non-residents. For two children from the same family, the cost is $75 per child for Auburn residents and $94 per child for non-residents. BEGINNERS PROGRAM

The Sno-King Junior Thunderbirds will offer a year-round, beginners-level program for boys and girls ages 5-10. No skating experience is necessary. LEARN TO SKATE CLASSES

An eight-week series with group and private lessons for boys, girls and adults is being offered at KENT VALLEY ICE CENTRE. Instruction is based on criteria set forth by the Ice Skating Institute. RUNNING

CHRISTMAS RUSH

This 27th annual fun run/walk is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12, beginning at Russell Road Park in Kent. The 5K run starts at 9:50 a.m., and the 10K starts at 10 a.m. A 5K non-competitive recreational walk also will be offered at race time. The course is flat and scenic. The cost for the run or walk only is $10 if registered by Dec. 4, and $20 thereafter. With a long-sleeve T-shirt, the cost is $20 by Dec. 4, and $25 thereafter. AUBURN POOL

The pool,, located adjacent to Auburn High School at 516 4th St. N.E. offers several programs. PUBLIC SWIMS are available Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. ($1 for anyone) and from 7-9 p.m. ($3 for adults, $2.50 for children and seniors, or $9 for a family). FAMILY SWIMS are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7-8 p.m. in the shallow end only ($3 for adults, $2.50 for children and seniors, or $9 for a family). WATER AEROBICS is available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-9 p.m. ($4). LAP SWIMS are offered Monday through Friday from 6-7:30 a.m. and noon-1 p.m. ($4 adults, $3 children and seniors). LESSONS are offered throughout the fall, with upcoming sessions set for Oct. 26-Nov. 19, and Nov. 23-Dec. 17, and are available from 1-2 p.m. or 5:30-7 p.m. ($6 per lesson for ages 3-5; $5 per lesson for ages 6-12). PAT POWERS CLINIC

This clinic for ages 13 and older (12-year-olds are accepted if they are going into 7th grade) is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12-13, at Kent Commons. Topics covered during the clinic will be putting spin on the ball to increase control, how to snap a ball instead of hitting it, and putting “pop” on serves.
