South King County Colts grounded by Lobbestael and the Yakima Mavericks, 20-15

Yakima Mavericks quarterback John Lobbestael rushed for 178 yards – 153 in the first half – as the Mavericks upended the South King County Colts 20-15, this past Saturday in heavy rain-soaked Pacific Football League action at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

Both teams now sit at 2-2 in league play, with the Mavericks enjoying a two game win streak. The loss snaps the Colts’ two-game win streak snapped.

Lobbestael accounted for all three Maverick touchdowns. In the contest, including an 85-yard run on the Mavericks opening drive. Lobbastael followed it up with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter from six and 33 yards out.

“Our tight ends blocked incredibly tonight,” Lobbestael said. “We had a lot of space on the outside. The linemen just put out incredible effort.”

The Colts scratched and clawed their way back in it thanks to a pair of Mike Astley field goals. He connected from 30 and 38 yards despite the downpour. The Colts were also credited with a safety when an errant pitchout found its way into the end zone. Maverick running back Jacob Massey (19 carries, 62 yards) fell on the ball and then was immediately piled on by a host of Colts.

The Colts trailed 13-8 in the second quarter after Astley’s second field goal. Lobbestael then made it 20-8 with his 33-yard keeper up the middle.

Fred Hawthorne then ran the ensuing kickoff back for an apparent 85-yard touchdown. The play was called back, however, because of holding. But on that drive, Tristan Gray (17 carries, 67 yards, TD) found the end zone from a yard out.

The teams played a scoreless second half, with the Colts holding Lobbestael in check, but unable to get anything going offensively.

“We played with a lot of heart,” said Colts coach Jeff Scott. “We got better as a team. We’ll be a better team next week than we were this week.”

Colts quarterback Leo Dickerson echoed Scott’s sentiments and is confident the team will improve upon today’s game.

“We didn’t give our hundred percent,” Dickerson said. “If we would have come out and did that in the first half, the game would be a totally different story. But we got to take the bitter with the sweet, go to practice, get back on the chalkboard and do what we got to do.”

The Colts return home May 21st against the South Sound Shockers. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner and can be heard live on KKNW 1150 AM.
